Metro
3.09.2008

For the first line of the Thessaloniki metro, Impregilo, Aegek and SELI will build a 2 x 7.7 km tunnel, 6.12 m bored diameter and 5.25 m finished diameter, lined with 30 cm-thick universal precast concrete segments. The line also includes 13 stations, also to be constructed by the consortium. The geology is Quaternary clay deposits, sandy clay and sands. The water table is practically at grade. The consortium is responsible for the design of civil works and E&M equipment. Due to the project’s complexity, some works are already under way while other sections are still in design, in particular the tunnels which currently are between the final design stage and the construction phase. SELI in joint venture with Aegek will excavate the twin tunnel with two EPB TBMs, back-up and muck train. Each tunnel will be attacked from one side by one machine. For mucking-out, the muck train arriving in the start station will be lifted (one wagon after the other) and emptied in a specific tank. The tank is continuously emptied by excavators loading trucks. SELI designed and made all the jobsite equipment and installations, subcontracting only the supply of the TBMs to Herrenknecht. Diaphragm walls will be built to shape the station perimeters, using Bauer hydromills, while digging between the walls will use excavators and loaders. During the digging of the stations, important archaeological remains have been unearthed, which caused delays to complete the stations and consequently to launch the TBMs. The project as a whole will cost EUR700 million, whereof EUR91 million for the tunnels.
