Channel Tunnel Rail Link Engineer Receives IStructE’s Gold Medal for 2008 9.04.2008

Arup director Mike Glover became in 2007 the seventh winner of the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering’s Sir Frank Whittle Medal in recognition of his achievement in the planning, design and construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) now announces it will honour Mike Glover with the 2008 IStructE Gold Medal, for his outstanding contribution to the design and construction of major multi-disciplinary projects around the world. 15/08.

IStructE has awarded the Gold Medal for 2008 to Mike Glover of Arup for his outstanding contribution to the design and construction of major multi-disciplinary projects around the world. The Gold Medal is IStructE's highest individual award and is made for exceptional personal contributions to the advancement of structural engineering. Since 1922, it has only been awarded 40 times. Previous winners include Ove Arup (1973), Edmund Happold (1991) and Michel Virlogeux (1996). Visit www.istructe.org and www.arup.com

Mike Glover is one of the most versatile and experienced engineers at Arup, where he joined as a graduate in 1969. Having trained as a civil and structural engineer with early emphasis on research and development and analysis, he expanded his skills into the design leadership of multi-disciplinary projects ranging from tall buildings, energy projects and large transportation and infrastructure projects around the world. He has an enviable track record of award-winning projects and is a Fellow of Arup, of IStructE and of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

He has focused the last ten years of his work on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL), one of the biggest UK infrastructure projects of the last century. The 109 km high speed rail link includes 150 bridges, around 26 kilometres of tunnels, the major rejuvenation of London's St Pancras station and the regeneration of large urban brown-field areas in Kings Cross, Stratford and North Kent. His involvement with this project saw him awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering's Sir Frank Whittle Medal in October 2007 for his contribution to the planning, design and construction of High Speed 1. As CTRL technical director, Mike led the design and management of the technical aspects of the GBP5.8 billion project. Visit www.raeng.org.uk/prizes/whittle 15/08.
