Safety

Safety Equipment for San Cristobal Tunnel in Santiago de Chile 22.06.2007
The 1.8 km San Cristobal tunnel in Santiago de Chile will pass below San Cristobal Hill, the largest public park of the city, and will connect the north and east areas of Santiago, reducing to five minutes the current travel time that amounts currently to 15 or 20 minutes. The tunnels will be 10 m wide and will accomodate two lanes running in each direction. Consortium San Cristóbal Express, comprised of Germany's Hochtief and Spain's Dragados, is in charge of the works. Once constructed, traffic flow of 35,000 vehicles a day is expected. The already operating free-flow electronic fare device TAG will be used.
For greater security, access for the rescue and maintenance services is facilitated and the tunnels will be interconnected by a 3.8 m-high single-lane vehicular tunnel. In addition, for fast evacuation of the users in case of serious incidents, seven pedestrian cross-passages, 3.7 m in height minimum, will be constructed every 200 metres. In all, eight tunnels including the vehicular gallery will be provided. Near the vehicular tunnel, parking bays have been designed (one in each tunnel). Click here and here.

The services planned for the operation of the tunnel include Banana-Jet® fans supplied by Witt & Sohn for the impulse of ventilation air; Schreder's 250 W AF4 sodium lights to provide the required levels of illumination; Glasel enamel wall panels made by Tubosider to improve luminosity; trays for the wires; water hydrants; a drainage water collector; a diesel generator and emergency lighting system in case of fire; an automatic fire detection system, with sensors each 10 metres (smoke, use of extinguishers, CO2, suspended particles); CCTV cameras each 100 metres, with Pelco orientable and static cameras; SOS emergency stations, each 150 metres, supplied Indra Sistemas; variable message panels from Odeco; traffic control system, communication system (for users to call the control centre) and loudspeakers; and a control centre.
