The 1.8 km San Cristobal tunnel in Santiago de Chile will pass below San Cristobal Hill, the largest public park of the city, and will connect the north and east areas of Santiago, reducing to five minutes the current travel time that amounts currently to 15 or 20 minutes. The tunnels will be 10 m wide and will accomodate two lanes running in each direction. Consortium San Cristóbal Express, comprised of Germany's Hochtief and Spain's Dragados, is in charge of the works. Once constructed, traffic flow of 35,000 vehicles a day is expected. The already operating free-flow electronic fare device TAG will be used.
For greater security, access for the rescue and maintenance services is facilitated and the tunnels will be interconnected by a 3.8 m-high single-lane vehicular tunnel. In addition, for fast evacuation of the users in case of serious incidents, seven pedestrian cross-passages, 3.7 m in height minimum, will be constructed every 200 metres.
