Safety

Monthly Focus - Smartstud road marker guidance. 9.01.2009

Each month tunnelintelligence will focus on a health and safety product that is used within tunnel systems. This month the focus is on SmartStud® a product produced by a New Zealand based company.

SmartStud® is a road marker guidance system that is highly visible whatever the weather or road conditions. Each SmartStud® consists of ten or twenty high-intensity LEDs. As such, in the sun, dark, fog or rain, they are visible from up to 500 metres away.

SmartStud® is now seen as an excellent method of providing intense roadway guidance in areas where cat’s eyes and overhead lighting do not suffice.

Unlike solar or hardwire power sources, SmartStud® in-roadway lighting utilises Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) allowing power to be transferred from a buried cable in the roadway to the light head without a physical connection. “The light head is able to pick up the power via an electromagnetic field. They are completely sealed and encapsulated so moisture and dirt cannot penetrate the light head and roadway movement does not cause connection failure. The inductive field is able to create high efficiency power transfer allowing a single power supply to power up to 2km of system and 200 lights. Most importantly, the IPT produces intense light output making the light heads daylight visible.”

SmartStud’s systems are installed worldwide, and are designed to provide high visibility lighting across many applications. SmartStud® may be used to compliment overhead or sidewall lighting in tunnels, and as a result improve driver visibility. By installing SmartStud® directly into the roadway: drivers guidance is improved; lane separation both inside and on the tunnels approaches is maintained; lane discipline is enforced; and clipping of curves is minimized. Consequently, disastrous head-on collisions, associated accidents and delays are avoided.
