Transurban has won a prestigious national safety award for enhancements to its CityLink tunnels in Melbourne. The US$7.8 million CityLink Tunnel Safety Project, completed in 2008, has won the Australian Safer Communities Award, which is sponsored by Emergency Management Australia, a division of the Federal Government.

The national award recognises best practice and innovation by organizations that help to build safer communities across Australia.The project, in planning since 2004, introduced or improved key safety features in both the Burnley and Domain tunnels, including life-size green safety symbols of the ‘running man’ to highlight emergency exit doorways, improved pedestrian safety rails, directional signs and new lighting to help identify exits, and an innovative stencil scheme with distinctive, bright colours for sections of the Burnley and Domain tunnel walls.

Architecture firm Denton Corker Marshall helped develop the design scheme, which meets international standards. The firm was the creative force behind CityLink’s iconic Gateway and Bolte Bridge. Transurban also worked closely with key stakeholders such as state road authority VicRoads and emergency services on the final scheme.
