The second tunnel boring machine digging Brisbane's $2.2 billion Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7) has broken through on target at Kangaroo Point.

The 4000-tonne German-made drill - named Matilda - started at Bowen Hills more than a year ago and has now travelled 2.8km of its 4.3km journey to Woolloongabba. Its underground partner Florence reached the same milestone among much fanfare last month, with the twin-tunnel project still on course for completion by the end of the year.

RiverCity Motorway CEO Flan Cleary said CLEM7's construction risks were greatly reduced now that they had successfully tunnelled past the deepest point of 60m below the Brisbane River. "We look forward to excellent construction progress continuing in 2009 as focus moves to the mechanical and electrical fit-out of the tunnel," he said.

CLEM7 will provide an additional river crossing, bypassing the CBD and up to 18 sets of traffic lights. It's also expected to reduce travel times by up to 30 per cent, cut fuel costs, lower stress and improve safety.
