SELI success in southeast Europe 3.02.2009

Italian contractor SELI has been active in Turkey and Greece, with TBMs in the ground in both countries.
In December 2008, SELI commissioned to ILCI the new 4.88 m-diameter double shield TBM with backup system for excavation of the 17 km-long MAVI hydro tunnel, the second longest in Turkey after Urfa, and part of a huge hydroelectric system in Konya province, Central Anatolia. Click tr/28. Visit www.ilci.com.tr and www.selitunnel.com.
In mid-December, 2008 a 9.45 m-diameter SELI EPB TBM completed the 5.5 km-long extension of metro Line 2 from Agios to Elleniko in Athens, Greece. The contract includes four new stations at Ilioupoli, Alimos, Argyroupoli and Elliniko, each 110 m-long with three levels, as well as an underground garage for eight trains. Work is being carried out by a jv of Aktor, Aegek, J&P and SELI and will be completed early 2010. Click gr/14. Visit www.ametro.gr and www.selitunnel.com.
Also in Greece, at the Thessaloniki Driverless Metro, a jv of Impregilo, Aegek e Ansaldo and SELI has assembled two 6 m-diameter EPBs that will bore twin 7.7 km-long single-track tunnels at 16-31 m-deep on a contract valued at EUR800 million. Click gr/13. Commissioned just before Christmas, 2008, the first TBM arrived at the new railway station position in the west of the city by late-January, 2009, at which time the second TBM was also ready for commissioning. From the new railway station, the line will traverse the city to the Papanastassiou Station in the east, and will include 13 stations at average spacing of 730 m. The driverless system comprises 18 trains, and is designed for high performance, with a transport capacity of 18,000 passengers/hour in each direction, a headway of 90 seconds, and an average commercial speed of approximately 30 km/h. Work is scheduled for completion in 2013. Visit www.ametro.gr and http://metrothessalonikis.tk. 06/09.
