Safety

Complete Safety Equipment for Lochkov Tunnel 13.07.2007

With a view of the experience from conflagrations in tunnels in recent years, the Lochkov (or Slivenec) tunnel on the Slivenec-Lahovice section of Prague’s southern ring road will be fitted with all safety elements for both common traffic and fire situations. Escape from the tunnel will be possible through separately ventilated cross passages between the tunnel tubes, built at intervals of 200 metres. The cross passages have fire-resistant doors at both ends. There is an emergency bay in the double-lane tunnel allowing vehicles to stop or for leaving disabled vehicles. SOS cabins containing telephones, fire extinguishers and other equipment will be installed every 150 metres. Part of the equipment is also a fire man with large hydrants for fire intervention. The lighting system with transition zones at portals, where gradually reduced intensity of the light allows the driver’s sight to adjust when entering or exiting the tunnel, has become a stand! ard design in road tunnels. A stand-by lighting system is available in case of accident or fire.

The tunnel will be equipped with a longitudinal ventilation system. Jet fans will be installed under the tunnel crown about 200 metres apart. The basic operation regime works in the direction of traffic. The ventilation will be turned on in case of fire, approximately after six to eight minutes, during which period the hot smoke kept under the roof gets cooler, spreads down to the road level and starts to threaten people in the vehicles. The fans in the neighbouring tunnel tube will be switched on in the same direction as in the tube with the fire so that the smoke and other combustion products are not sucked into the clean tunnel via the portal. A ventilation plant is designed for common tunnel operation conditions to secure the required dispersion of pollutants in the right-hand, ascending tunnel, and partly at the beginning of the left tube.

All the above-mentioned elements of equipment are demanding in terms of power supply. The transformer stations and distribution substations are located in one-storey buildings in front of the tunnel portals. The tunnel installations can be switched off every 400 metres. Backup power supply is provided in case of power failure.

Safety concerns apply even to the design of drainage. The drainage ducts along the curbs are interrupted by inverted siphons every 50 metres to prevent burning liquids from spreading in case of an accident. Click cz/22 .  Read ENews Weekly15/2005. 29/07.
