| Highway Operator Autostrade Invests Massively to Upgrade Tunnels Throughout Italy |
19.08.2007 |
Autostrade per l'Italia and its affiliates are carrying out a substantial investment programme to modernise and upgrade approx. 600 kilometres of toll highways on the overall network. This programme, due to be completed in 2012, will make it possible to deal with increasing traffic levels (+50% since 1990), Indeed, traffic is now well above the levels for which the network had been planned in the 1960s.
The investments amount to about EUR11 billion, of which about EUR10 billion financed by Autostrade per l'Italia in compliance with an agreement signed with Anas - the national road administration - in 1997 and with the fourth addendum to this agreement in effect since June 2004. Other investments necessary for structural and technological upgrading on the network, worth about EUR900 million, will also be made.
The works includes the widening to three or four lanes existing highways, the construction of new interchanges and the refurbishment and improvement of lighting, ventilation and fire fighting equipment in 466 tunnels.
Autostrade per l’Italia operates 517 tunnels on its network, which represents a length of about 280 kilometres. Most of these tunnels are located in Genoa and its neighbouring provinces, which concentrate 50% of the tunnels. Another 42% is situated on highway sections in Udine, Pescara and Florence provinces. The average length of these tunnels is 542 metres. This average length is 613 metres taking into account only tunnels equipped with lights because there are in fact 50 tunnels shorter than 125 metres where lights are not necessary, The longest tunnel spans 3,792 metres.
The number of tunnels within the programme is less than the total number of existing tunnels on the highways operated by Autostrade because 89 tunnels do not necessitate any improvements since they were designed and built recently and even comply with standards UNI 11095 on lighting design and also because 50 short tunnels of less than 125 metres do not necessitate any lighting.
Several invitations to tender have been invited this year for modernisation of the lighting, ventilation and safety equipment in long tunnels (see first table). Click it/129, it/130 & it/131. Other tenders have also been invited for more modest refurbishment works in shorter tunnels (see second table and read E-News Weekly 34/2007). Autostrade plans to invite other tenders by the end of the year for refurbishment works in other of its tunnels, both long and short.
