| Umberto I Tunnel Reopens in Rome |
14.09.2007 |
The Umberto I tunnel in Rome, better known as Tritone tunnel, reopened after refurbishment works that lasted for a month. The tunnel has been painted with Cimax Ecosystem Paint, a white cementitious paint produced by CIM and based on TX Active®, an active photocalytic process patented by Italcementi 38/07.
Mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni officially reopened on 8th September, 2007 the Umberto I tunnel, which connects Via Nazionale with Via del Tritone. During the now completed refurbishment works, the tunnel vault (9,000 square metres) was painted with Cimax Ecosystem Paint, a photocatalytic paint produced by CIM (Calci Idrate Marcellina), based on an active process patented by Italcementi, the TX Active®, which aims at improving air quality when coupled with a peculiar lighting system. In fact, photocatalysis is a process by which a catalytic substance activates an oxydation process thanks to the action of natural or artificial light, and this transforms noxious substances into innocuous components.
The paint becomes active when the luminous radiance initiates the photocatalysis and the consequence is that gas, smog, dust and fats decay instead of sticking to the walls and vault. Visit www.italcementi.it/newsite/txactive/home.html to read more.
To optimize the action of the photoactive paint, an adequate lighting system produced by Disano Illuminazione has been installed to intensify the photocalysis process. The removal of the old lighting equipment, the installation of the new lamps, their cabling, connection and testing was carried out by ACEA. Visit www.disano.it and www.aceaspa.it
In compliance with an agreement with the City of Rome, Italcementi and CIM conducted a series of preliminary analyses to collect and process data on the pollution before the refurbishment. The results will be compared to the tests performed at the end of the works to verify the efficiency of the makeover. Visit www.cimax.it
The 348 m-long, 17 m-wide Umberto I tunnel is one of Rome’s historical tunnels. It was actually built to connect Via Nazionale with the Spanish Square to ease traffic in the city centre. The tunnel was inaugurated on 20th October, 1902. Despite the construction techniques certainly not comparable to those of today, a bit more than two years sufficed to complete the project. Its portals were designed by famous architects, among whom Piacentini. 38/07.
