| Holland Tunnel to be Equipped with LED Lighting |
23.09.2007 |
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's board of commissioners on 20th September, 2007 authorized the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting on the George Washington bridge and in the Holland tunnel, part of a broader programme to equip all of the agency’s bridges and tunnels with energy-efficient lighting. Energy-saving lights for the Port Authority are part of the agency's overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% at all agency facilities from 2006 levels by 2050. Key among those initiatives is the future second trans-Hudson River tunnel between New Jersey and Midtown Manhattan to induce more people to take mass transit.
The new LED (light emitting diode) lighting in the Holland twin-tube tunnel (2,551 m / 2,608 m), which crosses the Hudson River, will replace the existing fluorescent lighting. The USD4.5 million project eventually will replace more than 4,200 fluorescent fixtures at the Holland tunnel with 1,736 LEDs. The new LED lights will last 15 years, compared with the roughly 18-month life span of the existing lights, providing an estimated annual energy and maintenance savings of USD340,000. Both projects are annually expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 3.3 million pounds and nitrogen oxides by 5,000 pounds. Work on the bridge and the tunnel is slated to start and finish in 2008. New lights to be draped inside the Holland tunnel will shine green, at least figuratively. LED lighting, which distributes light more efficiently and requires less energy. Click here. Visit www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/tunnels/html/holland.html 39/07. |
