Fourty-nine construction workers trapped in a 793 m-long collapsed roadway tunnel after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit in northern Chile on 14^th November have been rescued. The workers were trapped inside the Pedro Galleguillos coastal tunnel on Route 1 from Tocopilla to Iquique, about 14 km north of Tocopilla. The quake, which hit at 12:40 pm, was centered 40 km east-southeast of Tocopilla, a city of about 24,000 people. The area is about 1,245 km north of Santiago. The US Geological Survey said it was centered at a depth of 60 km.

The tunnel, completed in 1994, was closed on 1st October to do major excavation and repair works. This was scheduled until 7^th December. It was then planned to open the tunnel during the day and shut it at night to carry on with less heavy safety and maintenance improvements.

The workers stayed trapped in the tunnel after a collapse caused by the earthquake clogged the tunnel entrance. Important cave-ins have also been reported inside the tunnel. Repair work has been suspended for safety reasons.

Rescuers released first four workers and the remaining 45 others on 15^th November. The workers suffered no injuries and were found in good health. They were evacuated from the scene by helicopter on 16^th November. 49/07.
