The south Piedicastello tunnel on road SS 12, known as Abetone and Brenner, opened on 28th October, 2007. The tunnel was built by the Trento autonomous province and forms part of the urban and environmental redevelopment of the ancient city area. The north tunnel opened on 11th November. Click here
E&M equipment
In compliance with the most modern criteria for construction of road tunnels in urban areas, the tunnel has been equipped with the following outfit:
● unilateral permanent lighting system, with 100 W assymetrical high pressure sodium lamps;
● bilateral reinforcement lighting system, with 400 W symetrical high pressure sodium lamps in the threshold zones and 150 W-250 W lamps in the transition zones. The reinforcement lamps are controlled by a luminance regulation capable to activate or deactivate and vary the luminous intensity of the lights from 50% to 100% according to the existing luminance outside the tunnels;
● longitudinal ventilation system, with eight jet fans in each tube;
● complete SOS signalling with telephony and keyboard-based emergency call aid;
● fire detection system, with thermosensitive cable and integrated device in the tunnel management system;
● laser-type traffic control system;
● CCTV surveillance.
All this is fed by two MV/LV transformer boxes, placed at the north and south mouths.
Fire safety
Regarding anti-fire safety, the tunnel is equipped with:
● an emergency intervention equipment consisting of fire hydrants and extinguishers placed in the niches at a distance of 50 metres each;
● and an automatic fire detection system which, through the computer of the remote management system, triggers automatically a codified safety procedure.
In case of fire, the signal generated by the thermosensitive cable and/or the keys for emergency call will turn to red the traffic light at the tunnel entrances, will warn the firefighters and will command the ventilation in the direction of the traffic in the tunnel where the fire has erupted.
The people in the tunnel will therefore be able to leave their vehicles and, according to where they are, get out of the tunnel though the mouths or the escape exit situated at about the middle of the tunnel, which easily connects the two tubes to the outside, or find shelter in the tunnel not affected by the fire. The 930 m-long Piedicastello tunnel has been built by Lauro. The project required the extraction of 164,000 cubic metres of rock and employed 43,000 cubic metres of reinforced concrete and 3,100 tonnes of steel. It was built at a cost of EUR42,370,000. 50-51/07.
