Artificial Sky to Relieve Eyestrain in Tunnel

The 6.95 km Xuefeng Mountain tunnel shortens the journey from Changsha to Huaihua from eight to four hours. It is part of the Shaoyang-Huaihua highway in central China's Hunan province that was opened on 8th November, 2007 after four years of construction. The Xuefeng Mountain tunnel opens up the largest barrier between Shaoyang and Huaihua, and it is the third longest highway tunnel in China.

The tunnel made its debut with its special lighting effects imitating the blue sky with clouds, intended to relieve eyestrain for drivers. As an important part of the Shaoyang-Huaihua highway that connects central, southwestern and western Hunan and its surrounding provinces, planners carefully considered the needs of drivers when designing the lighting effects in the tunnel.

Strong lighting at the entrances of the tunnel ensures a more gradual visual transition into the tunnel. The next section has soft lighting, which finally leads to the inner sections with a ceiling of artificial sky. Click here and here. 52/07-01/08.
