The CPV consortium, formed by CSC SA (Lugano) and Pizzarotti SA (Bellinzona), signed the EUR43 million contract for the construction of Lot 854 at Vezia, the main lot of Ceneri Base Tunnel, including the south portal, 200 m of cut-and-cover tunnel, as well as drilling, blasting and lining both tunnels along a length of 300 m. Works at Vezia will continue until 2016. Commercial operation of the Ceneri Base Tunnel with scheduled train services is planned to start at the end of 2019. | Shenzhen metro line 3 progress |

A trio of NFM Technologies 6.28 m-diameter EPBs has begun excavation of metro line 3 tunnels in Shenzhen, China. The first machine got underway on 14.10.2008 driving the 2,535 m of twin-tube tunnel between Hong Ling and Lao Jie stations. The second machine began a month later, driving 2,400 m between Cui Zhu and Tian Bei stations, while the third machine is boring 1,085 m between Tian Bei and Shui Bei. The Shenzhen Municipal Government is expanding its underground system over the next couple of years, with new lines 2, 3 and 5, and extensions of lines 1 and 4. |

 Brisbane's second tunnel boring machine working on the Clem Jones Tunnel has broken through on target at kangaroo point. This tunnel started at Bowne hills more than a year ago and has bored through 2.8km so far. |

Three TBM EPB of NFM Technologies (6.28 m diameter begun excavation to build line 3 of the Shenzhen Underground system in China. The first TBM, started work on 14 November 2008, will carry out the 2,535 m of twin-tube tunnel between Hong Ling and Lao Jie stations; the second machine began service on 19 November 2008 and will dig out 2,400 m between Cui Zhu and Tian Bei stations; the third machine, started in December 2008, will bore 1,085 m between Tian Bei and Shui Bei. |

 Each month tunnelintelligence will focus on a health and safety product that is used within tunnel systems. This month the focus is on SmartStud® a product produced by a New Zealand based company.
SmartStud® is a road marker guidance system that is highly visible whatever the weather or road conditions. Each SmartStud® consists of ten or twenty high-intensity LEDs. As such, in the sun, dark, fog or rain, they are visible from up to 500 metres away.

Transurban has won a prestigious national safety award for enhancements to its CityLink tunnels in Melbourne. The US$7.8 million CityLink Tunnel Safety Project, completed in 2008, has won the Australian Safer Communities Award, which is sponsored by Emergency Management Australia, a division of the Federal Government. |
| STEC launches its own large-diameter slurry shield |

Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company (STEC) has announced the launch on 26.12.2008 of its in-house designed and built 11.22 m-diameter slurry shield. The machine is being employed on excavation of the duplicate 3 km-long DaPu road tunnel across the Yangtse river from the Pudong side to provide access for the World Expo 2010 site. | Ganzstein closes Semmering gap |

Completion of the second 2.1 km-long tube at Ganzstein on the S6 Semmering Expressway will provide the final link on the motorway route between Lower Austria and Styria. A joint venture of Porr, Ostu-Stettin, Strabag and Hinteregger constructed the parallel tube from both ends, using excavators in the east section and drill/blast in the west section to remove 175,000 cu m of rock. |

Alpine Bau, a subsidiary of Spanish construction giant FCC, has reported that its Robbins hard rock double shield TBM excavating a EUR47 million section of the north main line of the Yellow River diversion project has reached the Daliang chamber, some 13 km through the 25 km alignment. The tunnel has an internal diameter of 4.8 m and is lined with orthogonal segments manufactured at site, where some 55,000 of the required 83,450 have already been produced. |
| California high speed rail programme management |

The proposed USD40 billion (US$1 = EUR0.72), 1,290 km-long California high speed rail system will serve San Franciso, Los Angeles and San Diego, with branches to Sacramento in the north and Irvine in the south. Dependent upon chosen alignment, the route includes between 21 km and 37 km of tunnels of maximum lengths between 5.5 km and 8 km. |
